The king of the Korean street food.

BTS member Jimin made this Korean street food so famous. So-called the king of the street food, Tteokbokki(ddukbokki). What should I compare this food to? Hm… have you been to Argentina? This can be compared to Choripan, a famous street food in Argentina. Small, local tteokbokki houses are located near schools. It’s also known as school food.

 

Let’s dig a simple recipe.

Ingredients:

500g of tteok (Korean rice cakes), any shape is okei.

2 cups of water

2 cups of any stock (beef or vegetable stock) 3 tablespoons of gochujang (Korean chili paste) 1 tablespoon of gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, but optional) 1 tablespoon of soy sauce

1 tablespoon of sugar

1 tablespoon of minced garlic

1 onion, sliced

1 carrot, cut into thin strips

2 scallions, sliced

1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

Sesame seeds (optional)

Hard-boiled eggs (optional)

 

Instructions:

Soak the rice cakes in cold water for 30 minutes. Drain the water and set aside.

In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and stir-fry for a few seconds.

Add the sliced onions and carrots and stir-fry for a few minutes until they start to soften.

Add the stock, water, gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, and sugar. Stir well until the sauce is smooth and everything is combined.

Add the rice cakes and stir gently to coat them with the sauce.

Cook over medium heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened!

Add the sliced scallions and cook for another minute.

Serve hot, garnished with sesame seeds and hard-boiled eggs, if desired.
