A black comedy, Parasite
"You know what kind of plan never fails? No plan. No plan at all. You know why? Because life cannot be planned."
-parasite, Kim ki-woo-
If you want to get into more K-culture other than K-pop, let's try some well known movies.
One movie that came into my mind is Parasite.
"Parasite" is a 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller film directed by Bong Joon-ho. The movie follows the Kim family - a poor family living in a cramped semi-basement apartment in Seoul. The father, Ki-taek, is an unemployed driver, while the mother, Chung-sook, works as a housekeeper. Their teenage son, Ki-woo, and young daughter, Ki-jeong, help with odd jobs and tutoring. They struggle to make ends meet and often have to scavenge for free Wi-Fi from their neighbors.
Through a stroke of luck, Ki-woo's friend Min recommends him as an English tutor to the wealthy Park family. Ki-woo gets the job after forging a college degree and meets the Park family - Mr. Park, a wealthy tech company CEO, his wife Yeon-kyo, their young daughter Da-hye, and their young son Da-song.
The Kim family sees an opportunity to improve their financial situation and begins to infiltrate the Park family's life one by one. Ki-jeong becomes the Park's new art therapist, and Chung-sook becomes their new housekeeper. Meanwhile, Ki-taek takes over as Mr. Park's driver after getting rid of the previous driver through cunning means.
The Kims' deception becomes increasingly complex and audacious, and they manage to replace all of the Park family's domestic workers with members of their own family. However, things start to unravel when they discover that the Park family has a secret bunker hidden beneath their house.
The movie takes a dark and violent turn as the Kims' web of deception unravels, and the Park family discovers their true identities. The themes of class struggle, social inequality, and human greed are explored in a thought-provoking and suspenseful manner.
Without giving away too much of the ending, the climax of the movie serves as a poignant commentary on the absurdity of social stratification and the desperate measures some people take to overcome it.
"Parasite" is a well-crafted and socially relevant movie that has resonated with audiences worldwide. It has won numerous awards, including the Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.
